How Body Fat Percentage is Calculated
- US Navy Method: Uses height, neck, waist (and hip for females) measurements.
- BMI Method: Uses BMI, age, and gender for a rough estimate.
- Body fat percentage is a better indicator of fitness than weight alone.
Formula (US Navy):
Male: 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) - 450
Female: 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) - 450
Formula (BMI):
Male: 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age - 16.2
Female: 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age - 5.4
